Via Crucis
The Way of the Cross in Campo Vallemaggia was built around 1760 and, together with the three churches, is a testimony to the faith of the people of that time. It is listed as a cultural asset of regional interest in the Swiss list of cultural monuments.
Consisting of eleven chapels between the Oratory of San Giovanni Battista and the Church of San Bernardo, it begins at the Oratory of San Giovanni Battista, which represents the Baptism of Jesus, it follows to the Oratory dell'Addolorata, in memory of the Sorrows of Mary. Afterwards, one sets out on the Via Crucis path for the pilgrimage "in the footsteps of Christ". The path ends on the hill of the parish church of San Bernardo, which symbolises the Resurrection.
The chapels, as well as the whole village, were considerably damaged due to the climatic conditions and by the general landslide area. For this reason, in 1995, Professor Mario Pedrazzini, in collaboration with APAV (Association for the Protection of Artistic and Architectural Heritage of the Maggia Valley) and the Church Council of Campo, decided to find viable solutions for the renovation of the damaged chapels.
The roofs and the beams of the chapels were completely renewed. Due to the high humidity in the walls, the paintings were severely damaged and therefore required a complete renovation of the chapels. Two chapels (Ward IX and X) were rebuilt using the mosaic technique, as unfortunately it was no longer possible to restore the paintings.
