Church of San Bernardo

The Church of San Bernardo in Campo, with its frescoes and grandeur, is one of the most fascinating religious buildings in the Maggia Valley.

Restoration work was carried out between 2008 and 2012. The structure was damaged between 1892 and 1998 due to the shifting of the earth in Campo. The extraordinary displacement of: 7.2 m vertically and 30.8 m horizontally in just over 100 years has threatened the stability of the walls, and the deformation of the structure has caused extensive damage to furniture and decorations.

The exact date of the start of construction of the first foundations is still unknown. According to some analyses, there are three construction phases: the first from the late Middle Ages and the other two between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

The eighteenth century is considered the Golden Age of Campo. It is the century in which not only the entire Church of San Bernardo was realised, but also all the other important buildings such as the Addolorata Oratory, the Oratory of San Giovanni Battista, the Pedrazzini Palaces and the Via Crucis.
